DenisDenis started playing guitar as soon as he could afford to buy one, which was just after he left school, though whether he learnt anything about armed robbery at around that time is something he won't be drawn on. That first guitar was a Hofner semi-acoustic. He played in a band, the John Mcflare Band, at the less critical dance halls and pubs/clubs around the Scottish borders and Geordieland in the late sixties. Then the band took the plunge, packed in their jobs and went off to play in Germany. They played in Frankfurt and the Top Ten Club in Hamburg amongst other places, then came to Birmingham, which became home and where they played regularly. In the early seventies the band started touring as backing band for visiting American acts, notably The Drifters. Other acts were Del Shannon, Johnny Tillotson, Freddy Cannon, Arthur Conley, Roy C, Bobby Hebb, Ben E King, Edwin Starr, Len Barry, Jimmy Helms, Carla Thomas, The Tymes,The Coasters, R Dean Taylor, Linda Carr and the Love Squad, The Exciters, Major Lance, The Detroit Emeralds, Eddie Floyd. They recorded an album with Del Shannon ("Live in England"), another album with Major Lance ("Live at The Golden Torch"), they appeared with The Drifters on the Old Grey Whistle Test, on German Pop Show with Linda Carr and the Love Squad, and with Edwin Starr on Spanish TV. Denis was part of Cissy Stone Band which had a little success on New Faces in 76, then went into retirement for 15 years until he met Bob and joined Suspect, out of which Breakaway were born and here we are today.
